Planning Approved for New Aerospace Research and Innovation Centre at Farnborough College
The Challenge
ET Planning was appointed to secure planning permission for a purpose-built Aerospace Research and Innovation Centre at Farnborough College of Technology. The site lies within an area of strong educational, historical, and architectural context, and the development needed to reflect both the College’s ambitions and the town’s longstanding aeronautical heritage. The planning case involved several key challenges: Replacing an existing two-storey building with a new, modern facility. Ensuring the proposal reflected both the operational needs of the College and the local character of Farnborough. Navigating detailed design, height, and layout considerations in a sensitive educational setting. Responding to policy requirements for high-quality educational and employment-focused development.
Our Approach
ET Planning led the planning strategy and application process, working in collaboration with the College and architects Bond Bryan to shape a development that would be supported at committee. Early engagement: We held detailed pre-application discussions with Rushmoor Borough Council to identify and address any planning or design concerns prior to submission. Educational and employment justification: The proposal was framed as a response to a recognised regional and sectoral need for aerospace skills and innovation, reinforcing the College’s mission and contribution to local employment growth. Contextual design: Bond Bryan’s architectural plans delivered a part single-, part two-storey building that respected the site’s scale and replaced a previously demolished structure with improved functionality and presence. Planning policy alignment: The scheme was positioned within the framework of local and national policies that support high-quality, employment-led educational development. Clear narrative: We ensured the planning submission clearly articulated the heritage, economic and educational benefits of the project—gaining the support of the Council’s planning committee. Planning permission was granted, paving the way for a state-of-the-art aerospace facility that strengthens Farnborough’s status as a centre of technical education and aeronautical excellence.
